The D*ck Wears Prada

Toby Young's memoir How to Lose Friends and Alienate People was a fun read several summers ago, though the upcoming fall release of its movie adaptation leaves something to be desired.

Young is a polarizing personality, and the charm of How to Lose Friends depends on one's capacity for identifying with a character who for all intensive purposes is obnoxious, pathetic, and bitter about his inability to be the pseudocelebrity he thinks he deserves to be (incidentally, the follow up to How to Lose Friends, the Sound of No Hands Clapping reads like an outtake from My Life on the D-List).

Casting Simon Pegg in the titular role was a nice choice, and the apparent softening of Young's unlikeable persona should appeal to a broader romcom audience. Though if it's success somehow leads to more projects from attention whore Young, we may all be the worse for it.
